Live In The Light

Light reveals what is in me, both what is good and what is bad. Can you remember one of the worst things you’ve done in the dark? And now imagine if someone had turned on the lights right then. Terrifying.

We’ve brought that fear into the church and we theologize it by saying how God can’t be in the presence of unholy people. Even though when we first screwed up, He went out looking for us. He promises to never leave us, but he also promises to help bring us out of our darkness – our addictions, our brokenness, our shame, our fears, our quirks that hurt others, our meanness, our greed, our lust.

God loves us too much to leave us alone. He gets in our business, but in a way that is life-giving and full of light. The Spirit of God shines His light on our path and through us to our world. Did you know that it is the Holy Spirit’s job to help us become more like Jesus?

We can’t become more like Jesus on our own strength or merit, willpower is not enough. Only the Holy Spirit has the power to reveal the changes and give us the wisdom to make those changes God desires in our lives.

Imagine I gave you a play like Hamlet or King Lear and asked you to write a play like that – could you? Shakespeare could do it, but you couldn’t. But we hand people the Bible and tell them to live like Jesus, but we don’t show them how. I think if I spent every day with Shakespeare, asking him how to write great stories, eventually I could write a really great story, and if you spend every day with the Holy Spirit talking about the way of Jesus and consistent time with others who are learning from the Holy Spirit, eventually you will live more like Jesus.

I want to encourage you to enter into an exclusive relationship or partnership with the Holy Spirit. Make a commitment today that you won’t go it alone, you will invite His work and His way into your everyday.

In a partnership we make with the Holy Spirit, He is the one who comes alongside as Helper. He doesn’t take over our free will but plants seeds of light into our hearts and exposes the dark.
